BISD Awarded $577,412 for network improvements & phone system

Across the nation, thousands of schools and libraries apply for discounts from the Federal Universal Service Fund also know to educators as the “E-Rate”.  BISD applies annually just like every one else and this year we received funding that will enable us to replace the entire backbone of our current network as well as install a new phone system.

Technology Director, Lawrence V. Garcia, realized that the traditional PBX phone system was outdated and needed replacing.  This PBX did not even have voice mail capability. Moreover, the network equipment currently used was close to ten years old.  Working with an outside vendor, Mr. Garcia designed a network that will integrate all points of contact – voice, fax and e-mail – into one network.

By incorporating the phone and data lines into a single system based on current network protocols, BISD will be able to expand the capacity of its phone system simultaneously with its computer network.  With calls and data sharing the same lines, the new network will only be outfitted with one set of wires and connecting hardware.  This will allow capturing savings on maintenance, wiring and IT management right away while improving productivity for everyone in the district.

The picture shows Mr. Garcia with some of the old equipment this grant will replace.
