TECHNOLOGY is not deployed for its own sake;
..it is a means to an end. Whether the aim is to reduce costs, increase productivity, or protect the network and district assets, the ultimate goal is to improve the business of running a school district.
Network convergence has been envisioned for a few decades, but its realization has finally arrived at BISD. We have been at a transition point for several years. We needed to upgrade both voice and data networks significantly. But a data network upgrade on its own represented all cost and no savings without including the voice system also. The voice system will now be a business enabler that will provide payback for our investment in the data network.
As director, I face a significant engineering challenge, as the data network must account for the impact on the voice network. Users will expect the quality of their voice-over-IP calls to be similar to calls delivered on traditional voice networks. However, a combination of factors can cause voice distortion that makes it difficult to completely understand the remote person.
To mitigate these intermittent quality issues, I’ll need to ensure an appropriate data infrastructure is designed to support differentiated application treatment. This will allow my staff to identify link congestion at the edges of the network as well as bottlenecks in the IP network.
I’m not even on the first phase of this exciting project. Keep coming back to this page as I will update it as time permits with what my staff and I are working on.
Regards,
Lawrence V. Garcia Technology Director
